Kodiak Sharpening System
Know your ABC's and 123's? Congratulations- you're an expert sharpener!
Never before has there been a better way to get expert results when sharpening your woodturning tools. Why? The main reason this system works so well (and so simply) is it is made specifically for use with CBN wheels which do not change diameter. This woodturning tool sharpening system simplifies the complex issues surrounding gouge sharpening for beginners and expert wood turners alike.
The Kodiak Sharpening System is an essential in your woodturning tool kit.
The Kodiak is as advertised and works beautifully with the CBN grinding wheels. It literally takes just a minute to sharpen my turning tools to a better than new sharpness. The quality and constructions of these tools looks and feels to be life long tools. Thanks Wood Turners Wonders!
I have a sharpening service and originally I had to make adjustments to both sides of my grinder, but now with the Kodiak Mount once I have my left side 180 grit CBN wheel set I just put a piece of painter tape on the adjustment arm take it out and slide it into the other side up to the tape and now my 350 grit CBN side is already set perfectly saving me lots of time matching angles. It also lets me grind in either direction with my old mount I would have to flip the grinder around. I also like the size it gives you a lot of room to use your jigs on much longer than a Tormek Jig guide for grinders.
I am a total newbie. I purchased the Kodiak System because it seemed to be the easiest and most repeatable sharpening system that I researched. Thanks to Ken, who was very patient with me, I needed some additional coaching--and very kindly--I got it. Ken also directed me to a 43 minute video produced by Daniel Vilarino. This helped me immensely. I've watched this video twice, and it is quite detailed in how to use the Kodiak System. Now I just need to practice, practice, and practice. I am getting more and more confident in using the System, and many of my skews and gouges are getting closer and closer to perfection. (Did I mention I am a newbie?) Ken is quite accessible, so if you have a question he is there to help. I am very glad I purchased this Kodiak System. I have purchased other products from Ken and I love them.
I really love this tool rest. It is worth the money. I like the preset angles as well as the ability to adjust to any angle. I also like that it wraps around the cbn wheel for grinding on the side of the wheel. All around, a GREAT tool.
After using the Wolverine grinding system for years, I now have converted it to the Kodiak system. My main reason is repeatability, which I had trouble achieving in the past, due to the diameter of the grinding stone changing, which meant the distance of the gouge to the stone was never the same twice. Once I replaced the stone wheels with CBN wheels, this was no longer an issue, as CBN wheels do not change diameter. I was able to set the gauge into the tool holder at a fixed distance, decide which shape I needed, for a bowl or spindle gouge, then set the distance by sliding the holder into one of three fixed positions and hold it there with the locking gate. Now I have constant repeatability and my turning has improved, thanks to sharp tools with the same constant bevel angle.
